Continuous Professional Development

ALAS is committed to training always being available to lipspeakers on the register, to enhance the quality of support they offer deaf people. This will seek to promote best practice and develop British Sign Language (BSL) skills.

CPD is important for all communication professionals. The current NRCPD requirement for Lipspeakers is 24 hours CPD per year. CPD activities are classified as either Structured or Unstructured.

Structured activities are usually easy to identify. They are organised by associations, employers, training providers or other organisations, and they have stated learning outcomes.

Unstructured activity is anything without a stated learning outcome that helps you achieve your CPD objectives and develop your professional practice.

ALAS started back in 2017 by providing a minimum of 2 CPD opportunities annually for all members. As the Association has grown, our CPD offering has also developed and we now provide more than 10 CPD opportunities every year.

With so few lipspeakers in the UK (46, as of March 2026), and now only one professional Association for lipspeakers, appropriate CPD opportunities can be difficult to find and aren’t always focused on lipspeaking skills.

You can find all CPD information on our Events page:
