SUMMARY:“We’re just going to make you comfortable now” - Interpreting conversations about death
DESCRIPTION:One of the more challenging situations in which we work is when we are interpreting with a patient who is nearing the end of their life. As well as the emotional impact of giving voice to the dying\, the interpreter must also carefully manage their relationships with all parties while making some difficult decisions around the language they use to describe death. \nThis presentation will discuss the conclusions of a cross-disciplinary discussion\, where the presenter met with a palliative care consultant and a clinical nurse specialist to review the care given to a deaf patient and the lessons learned as we offered support at the end of his life. It will attempt to answer questions such as: \nHow impartial or emotionally detached is it appropriate for the interpreter to be in these settings? \nHow will they walk the tightrope between using language clear enough to be certain the patient understands the imminence of their own death\, while at the same time working with the euphemisms used by clinical staff to make their conversations as gentle as possible? \nHow will we interpret phrases like\, “We’re just going to make you comfortable now”? \nCost \nALAS members: FREE \nNON-ALAS member: £15 per person \nPlease let us know if you can attend via the ‘RSVP’ on this event page.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Workshop & AGM
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 2nd Aril for the first ALAS ‘LGBTQ+ Workshop’ between 10:00 – 15:00. \nTaking place on ‘Zoom’\, we will be joined by activist Jasper Williams. \n \nJasper (he/him) has a background in LGBT+ and Deaf/disability activism since 2012\, founding many LGBT+ groups in South Oxfordshire and North Wales. He previously held the position as the first Trans Officer at Bangor University. He became involved with Plaid Ifanc Cymru and then went on to work with NUS Wales in the role of LGBT+ officer delivering training across UK universities and colleges. He has an MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology and now works as a self-employed disability benefit adviser and community trainer\, delivering LGBT+\, disability and Deaf inclusion training. \nALAS Members only \nThe ALAS AGM will also take place between 15:00 – 16:00.
